Like the rest of India, we just couldn’t take our eyes off pretty socialite Arpita Khan’s Week-Long Wedding Extravaganza with businessman Aayush Sharma! If the invitations were beautiful, the mehendi was spectacular… and if the mehendi dazzled, the wedding was stupendous. At each occasion, Salman Khan’s family went all out to pamper their little princess, and kept raising the bar, ending with a star-studded reception, the likes of which we’ve never seen before!
There’s no doubt that this was THE Biggest Bollywood Wedding of 2014. SayShaadi brings you ALL the spectacular details in one place! From sweet shaadi pics to celeb videos that will make you gasp, get the full scoop here.
Meet The Bride & Groom
This couple needs no introduction, after making the headlines consistently for the last week. Arpita Khan is the adopted daughter of the Salim Khan family, who is doted on by all her big brothers, as well as Salim, Salma, and Helen. The love is mutual – she has a tattoo of their names, along with Aayush’s! Delhi-based beau Aayush Sharma is a businessman and aspiring actor, who seems to be head-over-heels in love with the charming Arpita. The two met through common friends, and swiftly fell in love, tying the knot a year later.
Long before the wedding ceremony started, the media was buzzing with news of their elegant wedding invite. A monogrammed decorated paper bag contained boxes decorated with the same floral print. These boxes, in turn, held intricately designed gold-plated invites for each function, with traditional looking embossing. Now that sounds like a regal invitation worthy of the guest list it went out to – both Bollywood scions and political bigwigs were asked to be a part of the Big Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were among the invitees to the wedding, as Aayush Sharma is Himachal Pradesh cabinet minister Himanshu Sharma’s son.
Mehendi & Sangeet
Arpita Khan’s nuptials started off in style, with a grand Mehendi & Sangeet function at big brother, Salman Khan’s residence, in Mumbai. Her magnificent embellished Sabyasaachi lehenga was the highlight of the evening, with its eye-catching velvet skirt, and floral detailing. We love a bride who has the confidence to pull off heavy jewellery and larger-than-life bridal wear! And we started to get really excited about just how grand her wedding outfit would be…
The haldi is traditionally a family function to beautify the bride & groom with a turmeric paste. Sisters-in-law Malaika Arora Khan, Seema Khan, and Amrita Arora upped the beauty factor at this star-studded evening manifold. And the gorgeous bride was definitely glowing at her haldi! After a six year long feud, Shah Rukh Khan & Salman Khan put aside their differences, and embraced the happy bride. No wonder she was all smiles… so were we. Now if that wasn’t gift enough, Shah Rukh also handed over a hamper of designer bags (he should totally attend every girl’s wedding)! Incidentally, Sallu bhai gifted the couple a 3BHK terraced flat in Bandra, as well as a Rolls Royce Phantom.
The Mumbai airport was abuzz with flashes as the who’s who of Bollywood all gathered there to fly to Hyderabad for the main wedding ceremony. People who gathered outside the 5-star Taj Falaknuma in Hyderabad were disappointed to note they couldn’t get a glimpse of their favourite stars – there was a four tier security team in place for half a kilometer!
The festivities started at around 4:30pm on November 17, and were hosted in the grand Durbar Hall where King George V had also been. Can you picture the grandeur? The majestic palace from the Nizam era is full of over-the-top indulgences like embossed leather wallpaper & 24 karat gold ceiling trim – a fitting backdrop for this Big Bollywood Wedding. On the Big Day, the wedding venue was dolled up even more, and looked ultra glam.
The Khan brothers, Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail, walked their little sister up to the pandal (aww!) and gave her away to Aayush, who rode over in a horse-drawn carriage, donning a sherwani. Arpita looked radiant at the Punjabi ceremony, in a couture red lehenga by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, embellished with gold farisha, vasla and badla embroidery. Later, the guests feasted on Hyderabadi delicacies such as Haleem, biryani, pathar ka gosht and dahi ke kabab, among the 100+ dishes on offer.
While we saw some really special photos from the ceremony on celeb social media profiles, the videos were even more fun! Aamir Khan sang Aati Kya Khandaala, while Salman Khan crooned Jhumma Chumma, and Katrina Kaif was persuaded to dance to Chikni Chameli.
Love these dance moves from Salman & Aamir, with Varun Dhawan joining in!
Equally entertaining were the celebrity selfies which kept popping up, featuring Aamir Khan & his wife Kiran Rao, Katrina Kaif, Karan Johar, Mika, and many others. But perhaps the highlight of the evening’s entertainment, before the fireworks display at 1am, was the bride’s letter to her family. Priyanka Chopra read out the sweet letter, which said, “I am the luckiest girl to be brought up in a family like mine.”
Arpita attended the festivities in a lighter, scintillating white outfit, embellished with Swarovski crystals, also by Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla. She seemed to thoroughly enjoy the rocking naach-gaana put up for the newlyweds.
The wedding ceremonies at the Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad concluded with a farewell lunch, to which Arpita wore a peacock gown designed by Falguni and Shane. However, before this, guests woke up to a sweet surprise – there were hangover kits in all the rooms, containing headache pills and a pack of mints for “maximum relief from last night’s overindulgent behaviour” with “love and concern from Arpita and Aayush.” They were also given beautiful boxes of assorted macaroons crafted by Le 15 Patissiere’s Pooja Dhingra, who designed the six-tier wedding cake. Now those are some cute touches you can easily incorporate in your own wedding!
Arpita & Aayush’s reception, held at the Taj Lands End hotel in suburban Mumbai, was a mega star filled event that was a perfect grand finale to the functions. The bride looked pretty in a heavy lehenga-choli in pleasant lemon and champagne pink shades, while her husband made a dashing escort in a black tux.
The guest list was certainly worthy of black ties and red carpets – Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu, Govinda, Hrithik Roshan, Shatragun & Sonakshi Sinha, the Akhtars, Prem Chopra, Ajay Devgn, and Subhash Ghai were among the A-list that showed up to congratulate the couple. And at 2am, the Baadshah of Bollywood himself arrived… just in time to do the Chaiyya Chaiyya with Sallu.
Celeb Style Watch at the Reception
Manish Malhotra was well represented on the red carpet, with Amisha Patel, Sonakshi Sinha, and the newly wed Dia Mirza all looking radiant in his creations.
The heroes of Tinsel Town were equally well turned out, in dashing suits. Dino Morea, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Siddharth Malhotra rocked the slightly stubbled cosmopolitan look!
Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu and Helen all proved that retro never goes out of style, and Beauty can last forever in Bollywood. These yesteryear stars always look glam.
From the tried and tested marriages, to the (relatively) newly weds… Genelia and Ritesh Deshmukh looked young and happy as they’re expecting their first child, while Imraan Khan and his wife Avantika look elegant together.
We love that Arpita Khan changed her Twitter handle to reflect her married name immediately! As the couple zooms off to New Zealand for their honeymoon, we wish them the very best of luck and a happy married life.
As for what’s next… at Punjabi weddings, it’s said that leaves from the bride’s kaleeras fall onto the heads of the next in line to be wed. Arpita Khan’s kaleeras fell on to Katrina Kaif, so we’re eagerly awaiting the next Big Bollywood Wedding!
Here’s SayShaadi wishing an awesome one to Arpita and Aayush!
